SUBJECT: ACE Telephone Photo Contest Winner

Here's a mock-up of this fall's ACE Telephone book with my photograph of an adult bald eagle on the cover.

I was hoping to take a nice landscape photograph to enter in this year's ACE Telephone's photo contest. As a matter of fact, I thought that they were only looking for scenery-type photographs until I called them on the last day of the contest to verify if that was the case. To my surprise, the photograph could be of anything as long as the photograph was taken in their coverage area.

With that bit of news, I started looking through some of my bald eagle photographs that I had taken in the area. This particular photograph (see above) was taken at the Minnesota Rest Stop off of I-90 near La Crescent, Minnesota. This rest stop is just below Lock and Dam No. 7 where bald eagles sometime fish in the winter.

I remember the day I took this photograph because I had to walk through knee-deep snow to get the photograph. It was close to noon when I took the photograph—something I don't normally do because of the harsh nature of the sunlight. In this case however, the ground was so white from the deep snow, the sunlight was reflecting upwards off the ground illuminating the bird from underneath. The reflective sunlight along with bright-blue clear skies made for a rather nice photograph .
